Chapter 12Power Oscillation Damping from VSC-HVDC-connected Offshore Wind Power Plants

Lorenzo Zeni

DONG Energy Wind Power A/S, Denmark

This chapter describes the implementation of power oscillation damping (POD) on voltage sourced converter high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) connected wind power plants (WPPs). The state of the art of POD from WPPs connected to the grid using power electronic sources and HVDC connections is described and used as a starting point to set out the practical considerations for the implementation of POD on VSC-HVDC-connected WPPs in real systems. Eigenvalue analysis and dynamic simulations of simplified and more complex systems are used to support the description and demonstrate the concepts.

12.1 Introduction

12.1.1 HVDC Connection of Offshore WPPs

The connection of WPPs to shore via HVDC technology becomes advantageous above a certain distance to the onshore connection point. Technically, the possibility of transmitting power over uncompensated AC cables is limited, depending on amount of power, the voltage level and the cable technology [1]. However, different AC solutions have been proposed, which could extend the reachable transmission distance: examples are AC transmission with intermediate compensation [2] and low-frequency transmission inspired by traction applications [3]. It is hence still unclear where the economic break-even distance between AC and DC technology lies.

However, further improvements in HVDC technology are expected ...
