9.2. ASSET MANAGEMENT

Asset management is all about how you name, organize, store, and back up your image files. Asset management plays a crucial role in your ability to find, work with, and share your photos. For most photographers this is certainly not the most fun or exciting part of the process, but it's not optional — if nothing else, the sheer volume of digital photographs you make requires you to develop and implement a comprehensive system for managing your images.

9.2.1. FILE STORAGE SYSTEMS

The first thing to consider is where your digital photos will be stored. Today this almost always means using hard drives, but there are myriad configurations to consider. I strongly recommend that you set up a storage system where all your photos are on one (or a very few) hard drive units with nothing but your photos on them.

If at all possible, don't store your entire photo library in your Pictures folder on your internal system hard drive. Instead, I recommend you use external hard drives — either single drives or RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) — systems to store your pictures. Using external drives allows you to easily change or upgrade equipment and move drives between computer systems if necessary.

NOTE

I keep my entire image library on a single external hard drive (my "master working drive"); I'm currently using a 1TB drive for this. Besides my image library, nothing else is on this drive.
