10.4. TAKING YOUR NEXT STEPS

For many nature photographers, photography is a lifelong passion. Often, progress is slow and even frustrating. It takes years to develop solid technical skills; the artistic process continues throughout a lifetime. It's important to be patient and allow the process to unfold naturally while actively nourishing and encouraging your creative development. Don't expect immediate results; you need to find your own ways to maintain your dedication and commitment to your craft.

Give back to the photographic community. Never forget where you came from; many photographers follow a similar path to development and there is always someone you can help along the way. Contribute whatever, wherever, and whenever you can.

Working toward specific goals is a very important part of developing your photography. When setting goals, be as specific as possible; you need to know when you've reached key milestones. In some cases, a set timeline makes sense. Periodically review your progress and alter your game plan as appropriate. Most importantly, when you evaluate your own progress, never compare your progress to that of other people.

Be willing to experiment fearlessly and fail along the way. There's a way of thinking called "beginner's mind." This is what you experience when you are fully immersed in the creative process and not distracted by anything else. You're not ...
