Chapter 7. THE INTIMATE LANDSCAPE

Isolating Elements

Selective Focus

Working with Moving Subject Matter

Close-Up Nature Photography

Abstract Nature Photography

Wildlife Photography

After you've made photographs of wide, sweeping vistas, it's time to get in closer. Photos of the "intimate landscape" bring the viewer into the scene for a feeling of immersion, of being surrounded by nature. Intimate landscape photos, as shown in 7-1, give you unlimited freedom to dramatically change the emphasis of a photograph with very slight adjustments to composition.

In this chapter, you learn how to isolate parts of the landscape, use selective focus to emphasize and de-emphasize elements in the frame, master the relationships between foreground and background, stop and blur motion, and apply special in-camera effects like zooming and panning. The chapter finishes with sections on wildlife, close-up, and abstract nature photography.
