Shutter speed is not really the speed of the shutter, but it's the length of time for which a camera's shutter is open when taking a photograph. Thus, it's the amount of time for which the digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light for collecting information. It's the most intuitive control out of all the camera controls because we can feel it happening.
Shutter speeds are usually measured in fractions of a second. For example, 1/60 is the fastest speed for which, if we shake the camera while clicking photos while it is held in our hands, it doesn't introduce a blur in the photograph. So if you are going to use your own pictures, make sure to not do this, or get yourself a tripod.
