“Let me write down your number and get back to you” can be much more efficient than “please hold the line.” The former is a typical example of asynchronous communication. This can be much more efficient than actually holding the line, which is the synchronous way of conversing. While holding the line, waiting for a response, you are blocked—unable to engage in useful activities.

In real life, when you tell something to a person, you don’t mind waiting for answer (beyond some form of acknowledgement that your message was heard and understood) if and when:
