TOAD began with one window, the SQL Editor. Jim McDaniel developed it to improve the efficiency of developing and testing code (see Figure 16.1). The alternative at the time was using SQL*Plus only, or using SQL*Plus in conjunction with a text editor. Both methods were cumbersome. So, the SQL Editor was developed. It is still the window where developers spend most of their time.

TOAD developed a following. As the product expanded into multiple windows loyal followers of TOAD offered requests for additional features and options. As a result, the features, options, and even windows expanded.
