The tools on the cover of Palm and Treo Hacks are a Palm and a Treo. The PalmPilot was invented in 1996 by Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky, and Ed Colligan, founders of Palm Computing. Hired to develop handwriting recognition software for a handheld device, members of the development team began to see greater possibilities. Once the software was finished, they turned their attention to better hardware design. Hawkins tested the size of a potential portable device by carrying a block of wood in his pocket. Before long, the PalmPilot was born. Hawkins went on to oversee the licensing of the Palm OS.

The PalmPilot is now merging with smartphone technology such as that offered by the Treo, which adds cell phone, email, and instant messaging functionality to the handheld device.

Adam Witwer was the production editor and Nancy Reinhardt was the copyeditor for Palm and Treo Hacks. Jeffrey Liggett proofread the text. Abby Fox and Claire Cloutier provided quality control. Julie Hawks wrote the index.
