Manipulating information of any form – especially text – is something that Perl is very well known for. Perl was originally a text processing language and over the years the expansion of the Internet and the increase in text-based information has kept Perl in the forefront of people's minds.
Python doesn't have quite the same heritage, partly because many people migrating from Perl to Python can't see how a language without the =~ and built-in regular expression system can possibly be used for processing text. Python is also better known for its mathematical abilities over its text- and data-processing abilities, largely because of its built-in support for large integers and complex numbers.
