Python has always been seen as a tool for rapid application development (RAD) and, whilst there is a huge push towards development of web based applications, there are still sites that require GUI-based applications to interface to internal databases and systems.

There are many different toolkits out there for GUI development, including those that build on the popular QT, KDE, and Gnome GUI systems which fit on top of the X Window System. Many of these toolkits are supported under both Perl and Python but they are limited to being used on Unix-like operating systems as they all build on the core X Windows technology.
