Chapter 11. Gas Lift
11.1. Introduction
In Chapter 9 the relationship between tubing and inflow performance led to well deliverability. If the required bottomhole flowing pressure to deliver a certain inflow is smaller than the tubing pressure difference caused by a fluid with a given flowing gradient, then artificial lift may be employed.
Gas lift is one method of artificial lift. The other is mechanical lift, discussed in Chapter 12. For gas lift, gas is injected continuously or intermittently at selected location(s) along the production string, resulting in a reduction in density of the mixture in the tubing, and thus reducing the hydrostatic component of the pressure difference from the bottom to the top of the well.
