2.1 Installing Git

If you feel comfortable with Makefiles and make is your constant companion when adding new software to your computer, you can skim most of this section. If you’ve never heard of any of these, don’t worry—this section walks you through the process of installing Git for the first time.

Git has its heritage in the Linux world. It was originally meant to be downloaded as source code and compiled. Most modern distributions of Linux have a version of Git in their package repositories, and both Fink[7] and MacPorts[8] have Git packages. If you’re on Windows, several options will get Git up and running, which you’ll learn about in Installing on Windows.
