Git has many great tools that are packaged directly with it. Installing it through a package system such as apt-get or MacPorts means you might have to install these tools separately.

gitk

Arguably one of the most useful tools in Git, gitk visualizes your repository’s history, showing you how the various branches come together in the history.

gitk is billed as the “original Tcl/Tk GUI for browsing the history of a Git repository.” It requires Tcl/Tk, which is already installed on many Linux and Mac computers.
