Probability may seem intuitive on the surface — and some of it is. However, some of it isn’t. Many mistakes can be made if you don’t understand what’s really going on behind the scenes. In this chapter, you take a look at some of the most common probability errors and misconceptions that can happen to anyone, just because of the nature of probability. It’s not the easiest subject in the world; however, clearing up common pitfalls will help you raise the bar on your level of understanding and help you avoid problems down the road.

Forgetting Where Probabilities Live

Probabilities have strict rules, and you always need to check when you are finished with a problem to make sure those rules are being followed. The two biggest rules of probability are:

  • Each probability lies between 0 and 1.
  • The sum of all the probabilities of all the outcomes in the sample space, S, must be 1.
