Traditional manga is printed in strict black and white on paper that’s not the highest quality in the world. Not only are you working without color, you’re often working without shades of grey. That means everything needs to be toned or shaded in black and white in order to provide contrast and definition to the panel. Toning and shading are interchangeable terms; we use both words throughout the chapter to mean the same thing.
