A good project manager will make it immediately clear to all new functional employees that if they perform well in the project, then he (the proj-ect manager) will inform the functional manager of their progress and achievements. This assumes that the functional manager is not providing close supervision over the functional employees and is, instead, passing on some of the responsibility to the project manager—a common situation in project management organization structures.
