It may seem glamorous to manage projects related to the Olympic Games. But one must always be careful what one wishes for because the grass is not always greener on the other side. All projects come with headaches. Most of us understand the headaches and the accompanying risks for our own industry and the types of projects we manage. But on some projects, such as those involving the Olympic Games, the enterprise environmental factors can be significantly different from what we have dealt with in the past.

Today's Olympic Games are watched by more than two‐thirds of the world's population. Managing projects for such an event carries with it prestige and certainly looks good on a resume. Unfortunately, the environment in which the project managers must perform may very well be different from anything they have dealt with in the past.
Olympic events are a blend of sports, politics, and big business. Perhaps sports, politics, and business should be the triple constraints on each project rather than the traditional time, cost, and scope constraints. Governance is provided by numerous stakeholders that may have political or hidden agendas. History has shown us that the final cost of some of the Games has been between five to ten times their original budgets. The challenges, and accompanying risks, are quite complex.
