8章基本的な組み込みモジュールと標準ライブラリモジュール
Pythonでは、組み込みという用語に複数の意味がある。多くの場合、組み込みとは、import文を使うことなくPythonコードに直接アクセスできるオブジェクトを意味する。7.1.1.3項では、この直接的なアクセスを可能にするPythonのメカニズムを紹介した。Pythonの組み込み型には、数値、シーケンス、ディクショナリ、セット、関数（3章）、クラス（4.1.1項）、標準例外クラス（6.6節）、モジュール（7.1節）が含まれている。11.1節では、ファイルを取り上げる。14.4節では、Pythonの内部演算に本質的に関連するその他の組み込み型を取り上げる。本章では、8.1節で基本的な組み込み型をさらに取り上げ、8.2節でbuiltinsモジュールが提供する組み込み関数を取り上げる。
モジュールの中には、Python拡張とも呼ばれるアドオンモジュールとは対照的に、Pythonの標準ライブラリに含まれているために「組み込み」と呼ばれるものがある（ただし、それらのモジュールを使うには、import文が必要である）。
本章では、基本的な組み込みモジュール —— 具体的には、標準ライブラリモジュールsys、copy、collections、functools、heapq、argparse、itertoolsを取り上げる。モジュールxについては、「xモジュール」節で説明する。
9章では、文字列関連の基本的な組み込みモジュール（string、codecs、unicodedata）を同じ名前の節で説明する。10章では、reモジュールを10.1節で取り上げる。
