As an embedded system is powered on, the execution control is first obtained by a special program called the system bootloader. The bootloader, located in nonvolatile memory, is responsible for setting up the processor state and preparing for loading the embedded application—an Executable and Linking Format (ELF) object. A bootloader can load an ELF object from the host platform via a serial or network connection, or directly from nonvolatile memory on the target board.
