Chapter 10. Real-Time Dashboards
Real-Time Dashboards are interactive visualizations that update continuously (or at brief intervals) to display newly arriving data. Unlike traditional reports that update on a fixed schedule or must be manually refreshed, Real-Time Dashboards provide immediate visual analysis from streaming data sources.
This capability is most valuable in scenarios where up-to-date information drives decision making, such as monitoring real-time sensor streams, observing the behavior of website visitors, and detecting anomalies as and when they happen. In an age of instantaneous information, when businesses need the right insights at the right time, a well-crafted Real-Time Dashboard ensures that decision makers never see stale information. Whether in a shop floor display of machine metrics or an executive dashboard of real-time sales figures, live visualization enables faster responses and data-driven decision making right then and there. It shifts analytics from being schedule driven to event driven, so insights are produced seconds after data is generated. This immediacy can be a game changer for use cases such as fraud detection, operational monitoring, and IoT telemetry, in which late surfacing of data translates to lost opportunities or critical events.
