Waking up first thing in the morning to my heart racing was familiar and normal for me. “What stressful events do I have on the agenda for the upcoming day? Am I prepared? Did I get enough work done yesterday? Is there anything wrong with my health? What about my family’s health? Did I say anything the day before that I regret?”
Some version of these thoughts would swirl through my head before I even realized they were there. This would happen before I opened my eyes, before my body had even recognized it was awake. I was living every day like I was completing a checklist. If I made it through the day without something bad happening, I breathed a sigh of relief—until the next morning.
