The annual Comic-Con International: San Diego (formerly San Diego Comic-Con) is a four-day convention that takes place every July and that began inauspiciously in 1970 when a group of science fiction fans collaborated together and founded the first comic book convention in southern California. The purpose was to celebrate not only comic books, but also other aspects of the arts and popular culture including films and science fiction and fantasy literature, in hopes of giving them wider recognition.
