Countless artists and teachers have inspired me over the years. Here are some who I always have in mind while sketching and painting.
James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903): Primarily known for his oil paintings. I’m inspired by the etchings that Whistler made late in his life when he visited Venice. Without color, Whistler perfectly captured Venice’s shabby magnificence.
J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851): British artist known for his brilliantly atmospheric paintings. I’m drawn to the sketches and watercolors he did while traveling through Luxembourg in 1839.
Félix Ziem (1821–1911): French artist who captured the light of Venice and Istanbul in his paintings. His sketchbooks are a treasure to behold.
