2.7 Summary
In this chapter, we learned about the basic elements of relational databases. We went over the individual components that makes the machine work: databases, schemas, tables, views, keys, indexes, procedures, triggers, and authorizations. We also talked about normalization, which is not a technical database component but a globally accepted best practice regarding table relationships.
We mentioned ERDs and used them multiple times in this chapter, as we will keep doing in the rest of the book. If you’re not familiar with ERD symbols, now would be a good time to read our appendix on ERDs before moving on to further chapters. This is your last reminder about ERDs!
