Any structure is composed of beam and column members. Structure is subjected to external loads such as dead loads, wind loads and hydraulic loads. Axial load in any member produces tensile or compressive stresses and if load is compressive and structural member is long, it causes buckling in member resulting in the collapse of a member or structure as a whole. Transverse load (perpendicular to the axes of the member) produces bending moment and shear force in the sections of the member and at a critical section beam/cantilever member may fail due to excessive bending moment.
