Glossary

This is not a traditional Glossary. We have defined all the terms as we wrote the book and have provided an index to make it easy to find the definitions without repeating them here. Nevertheless, we decided to create this Glossary of terms that are often used differently across countries, companies, and industries.

Demand Manager
Sometimes referred to as the Demand Planner, this person reports to the Sales and Marketing VP, or, in some organizations, the Commercial VP, and is responsible for Demand Planning covering the aggregate Demand Plan over the full planning horizon and Demand Control for execution of the near‐term detailed plans in execution of the aggregate Demand Plan approved in the Management Business Review.
Family
Often a product family is referred to as a category, a segment, or an aggregate product level. This is the highest and most appropriate level company Leadership considers when viewing aggregate plans over the business planning horizon, a minimum of 24 to 36 months rolling with the Leadership focus on months 4 and beyond. Generally, the number of product families for a business should range between 5 and 15, with the families comprised of items that are similarly marketed and sold in order to keep the focus on engaging the commercial side of the business.
Finance
Finance is a part of every single box in the Business Excellence Planning models and must be committed and not involved.
