Chapter 8. Warehouse Management and Operations

A warehouse is typically viewed as a place to store inventory. However, in many supply chain systems, the role of the warehouse is more properly viewed as a switching facility versus just a storage facility as it provides time and place utility for raw materials, industrial goods, and finished products, allowing firms to use customer service as a value-adding competitive tool.

As such, warehouses are one of the more complex areas of the supply chain since they are the point of intersection for all of the members of the supply chain.
