The engagement of concerns regarding sustainability and building conservation has had a long incubation. Government initiatives such as the Green Deal bring urgency for the issue to be addressed and understood by architects not simply in technical but also in philosophical terms. Internationally, focus is drawn to the challenges of developing conservation strategies against the tide of new development. Unlike the period of development that took place during the Industrial Revolution in the UK, the climate change agenda focuses on issues of conservation in its broadest terms and lends the debate serious responsibility in the context of contemporary global development.
