6Attract the Best Talent

As advanced as our society seems to be, some things haven't changed much. Although newspapers aren't what they once were, and people do not buy want ads in newspapers, they're still doing the twenty-first-century equivalent: They place ads on Indeed, or LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter and think, There. We took care of that task.

If all you do is take those simple actions, you're not really an active participant in the marketplace. You're a filter feeder, like some high-tech clam. You mostly sit there and applicants stream by, after applying at your website or through one of those mega sites. Similarly, your recruiter may have an idea in their head of how they do it. Why do they post ads on a certain job board this quarter? It's mostly because it's a familiar strategy. That could be one rung up from chaos.

We want to be clear that there is nothing wrong with quickly placing several ads for a role; in fact, we do it too. It's just that you can't stop there, because the competitive bar for attracting great candidates is now so very high.

You don't want to just hire the best of who happened to appear this week—you want to hire one of the best people in the world for this job. And how do you know who that person is? Well, there are about 700 million résumés on LinkedIn. You could look at all of them, but nobody has the time to do that.
