これまではチームの人間的な側面について述べてきた。エンジニアチームのリードに必要な基本的なスキルと、有害な人の危険性について考察した。これらのスキルに加えて、組織をうまく進める方法を理解する必要がある。多くのソフトウェアエンジニアは機能不全に陥った官僚的な会社で働いているため、仕事を効果的に進めるための小手先のテクニックが必要である。このことを「社内政治」や「ソーシャルエンジニアリング」と呼ぶこともある。
ぼくたちは「組織的操作」と呼んでいる。
5.1 善玉、悪玉、戦略漢
大企業は複雑な有機体であり、内部を進んでいくには少なくともGPSと懐中電灯とトラックいっぱいのパンくずが必要だ。

まずは、チームがうまく機能している理想的な会社の様子を見ていこう。次に、機能不全な会社がチームの成功を邪魔していることについて議論しよう。そして、両方の会社で仕事を成し遂げるための戦略を検討する。最後に、すべてがうまくいかなかったときのプランBを見ていこう。
5.2 理想：チームがうまく機能している会社
うまく機能している会社には2つのレベルがある。いつも相手にしているマネージャーとその背後にある組織だ。後者にはエンジニア・ミドルマネージャー・経営者・営業・法務などが含まれる。
