In 1992, the Parliament passed the Constitution 74th Amendment Act 1992, relating to municipalities (Urban Local Government).

It was assented by the President of India on 20th April 1993. |

The purpose of the act is to provide a common framework for the organizational structure and statutory mandate of urban local bodies, in order to allow them to function as successful democratic units of Local Self Government. |
