Beginning with this chapter, and through to chapter six, I present various types of data gathered during my ethnographic fieldwork and empirical analyses of the discursive constitution of jouge kankei in secondary school clubs. In this chapter, I will first show that, upon entering junior high school, students in Japan experience immediate socialisation into the roles and expectations of jouge kankei through club activities.
