What Is the Energy?
I DON’T RECALL EVER BEING TAUGHT about energy within a photograph. I suspect we were all too busy just trying to nail our focus and exposure. But somewhere along the way, it became clear to me that some photographs have more energy than others. At first, I thought the energy in the image came from the subject itself: a fast skier, a running child, or newlyweds on the dance floor. But after seeing many photographs with these kinds of subjects that didn’t possess that energy, I began to realize that it is the photographer’s choices that put that energy into the final picture. So it’s not just an energetic subject, but a subject energetically expressed, that brings the image to life.
