2 The evolution of business schools: past and present

Higher education is in a time of transition, and colleges and universities alike are struggling to keep pace. This effect is particularly seen in schools where their pedagogical foundations are evolving so quickly—​and so dramatically—​that adapting curricula, faculty, and support resources is a daily challenge. This is most visibly seen, perhaps, in business schools where challenges come from a number of external factors:

  • Changing student populations (new generations, cultures, attitudes)

  • Emerging and evolving labor market and workplace demands

  • New technologies and research on learning methods and pedagogy

  • New market and societal “shocks”; e.g., climate change, social media, sustainability ...
