Stakeholders and organizational politics

The stakeholder approach originates with R. Edward Freeman (1984) and points at the wider purpose of the organization in the eyes of the various people who have some kind of stake in it. It builds on earlier work that recognizes the organization as a political arena (e.g. Cyert & March, 1963; Etzioni, 1964; Pfeffer, 1981), where conflicts of interests need to be resolved and coalitions emerge. This is also the place where corporate social responsibility comes to the fore. Overall, the focus is on people – either individuals or collectives – and whether their interests are met.
