CHAPTER 5 Lighting on Location

 

 

 

My goal when using a flash is to make the image still feel within the realm of a naturally lit photograph. “Natural” meaning that even if it’s indoors it will feel like it could have been taken using existing light sources. For my travel magazine and reportage work – especially in places like North Korea, Iran, and Myanmar – I’m a one-man band. That means traveling light and low-key. In general, I want my flash to positively affect my photography by filling in shadows and so on without the image screaming, “Flash!” While some fashion photographers want that “paparazzi” look, it’s not for me nor would I suggest it for your travel photography.
