CHAPTER 10Practice, Not Theory

Point-of-View

Think about visual structure, but more importantly use it. Select visual components that help you tell the story. This requires a point-of-view.

The term point-of-view has a variety of meanings. Often it refers to the camera angle but in this book point-of-view refers to how the filmmakers want the audience to feel emotionally about the subject and story.

For example, if a writer creates a detective, the story will be written with a particular point-of-view in mind. Here are four different points-of-view about that subject: A Detective.

  1. Detective as an intellectual genius

    —Sherlock Holmes as played by Basil Rathbone in The Hounds of the Baskervilles (1939).
