Abstract
This chapter describes the microstructure development of Si3N4 and the role of the rare-earth elements in the processing and the microstructure evolution of Si3N4 monoliths and Si3N4–SiC composites. The chapter also summarizes the effect of rare-earth oxide additives on the fracture toughness of Si3N4 materials via a microstructure design as well as the properties of the residual glassy phases at the Si3N4 grain boundaries. Moreover, the significant effect of the rare-earth oxides on the in situ formation and distribution ...
