13.5 Exotics

As mentioned in the beginning of this chapter, a large variety of methods exists for moving data back and forth between main memory and external storage. Since the majority of current (transaction processing) systems uses the read-write technique, all the others have been relegated to the exotics section. This does not mean they are generally inferior or less suited for transaction processing; with new storage technologies, the picture may change significantly.

The various techniques to be considered here have tried to improve on different aspects of simple read-write files, depending on what the designers thought to be important. There are two categories that have received particular attention.
