This section illustrates the implementation of a B-tree by presenting the details of two of its key functions, readkey and insert, including the split operation. The algorithms are expressed in pseudo-code and in C, depending on what is assumed to be obvious and what requires (from our perspective) some more elaboration. But note that even the C-code programs must not be mistaken as a real-life implementation of a B-tree; the entry structure has been simplified considerably to avoid the complications resulting from variable-length entries, since this is not specific for the functional principles of B-trees.
