Chapter 4The ATP Package: Capabilities and Applications
Juan A. Martinez‐Velasco and Jacinto Martin‐Arnedo
4.1 Introduction
ATP is an acronym that stands for Alternative Transients Program [1,2]. It is a non‐commercial simulation program based on the ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) developed by Bonneville Power Administration [3,4]. ATP was originally developed for simulation of transients in power systems; current ATP capabilities allow users to apply it to the analysis of electromagnetic and electromechanical transients (i.e. overvoltages, subsynchronous resonance, wind power generation), the development of models for power electronics devices (FACTS, Custom Power), or the design of protective relays.
Since the first ATP version was released, several simulation tools have been designed to help ATP users. These tools can be integrated in a single package that users can customize for specific applications. Presently, the acronym ATP is used to denote a package that consists of at least three tools: (i) the graphical user interface (GUI) ATPDraw [5]; (ii) the simulation tool TPBIG; (iii) a postprocessor for graphical output.
The acronym ATP was originally used to name the simulation tool. For many users, ATP is still the simulation tool; in this book ATP is used interchangeably to name indistinctly the package or the tool, while TPBIG is used to name the simulation tool.
ATPDraw is an interactive Windows‐based GUI that can act as a shell for the whole package; that is, ...
