Chapter 8Power Electronics Applications
Juan A. Martinez‐Velasco and Jacinto Martin‐Arnedo
8.1 Introduction
Power electronics systems are spread to all voltage levels, from extra high voltage (EHV) transmission to low‐voltage (LV) circuits in end‐user facilities [1–4]. Power electronics applications include, among others, high‐voltage dc (HVDC) links, adjustable‐speed drive technologies, energy storage and renewable energy integration, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and Custom Power devices. Solid‐state technologies have drastically changed some applications (e.g. rotating machine drives, integration of renewable energy sources) due to the flexibility they add in the control of power variables. As these applications are increasing, there is an increasing demand for a better understanding of their behaviour and dynamics. The need for power electronics modelling and simulation is driven by both existing and new applications. Computer simulation appears as an adequate solution for evaluating converter designs and testing control strategies. Objectives of the simulation include: verification of an application design, prediction of a system performance, identification of potential problems, or evaluation of possible problem solutions. Simulation can be especially important for concept validation and design iteration during the development of a new product.
The theories of power electronics are not discussed in this chapter, instead the focus is on the simulation of the interaction ...
