Multicast and Multicast Domain Name System (mDNS)

Network traffic is either transmitted from one to one (termed unicast), from one to many (termed multicast), or one to all (termed broadcast). Unicast packets have one source and one destination. However, when you have multiple recipients for the same traffic, unicasting to each recipient would mean sending one copy of the data for each destination. Sending data this way requires the sender to create copies of the data matching to the number of the receivers and results in an increased network load.
