In the previous chapter we learned how to create simple custom maps using the My Maps feature. You don’t have to stop there, however; more sophisticated map mashups can be created using the Google Maps API. All you need to know is a little HTML and JavaScript—as well as your location’s latitude and longitude.
The Google Maps API lets you add custom markers, info windows, and overlays to your maps. Each element is added via a distinct line of code, which then uses the Google Maps API to retrieve the appropriate map from Google.
