Introduction

It seems that the complexity of a virtual desktop environment has increased exponentially since the technology was first introduced. This has been driven by the demand to scale the solution to meet the needs of environments with thousands and tens of thousands of desktops. As the scale increased, problems that were manageable with a 100 virtual desktops became acute problems. The complexity has come from pressure to continually improve the capabilities of a virtual desktop and also to address load by offloading it to different layers of the architecture such as caching on the host versus storage infrastructure.
