When we talk about load balancers, traditional load balancers are typically placed in the aggregation layer. Load balancing can be implemented with hardware, software, or a combination of both. One of the first methods of load balancing was round-robin DNS. In the current cloud era, we have applications running in multitenant environments and the number of load balancer requirements also gets increased. In a nutshell, if every application tier needs a load balancer, it is extremely difficult to get an optimal performance. This is where virtual load balancers are really making a difference, compared with physical load balancers.
