Infra Red

6.1 Background

Besides wireless applications based on WLAN and Bluetooth technologies communication via infrared radiation is on offer since some time. Infrared is light with wavelengths between 7.8 x 10–7 and 10–3 m corresponding to a frequency range of 3 x 1011 Hz up to 4 x 1014 Hz. One advantage of infrared radiation is its marginal harmfulness and susceptibility against electrical interference. One disadvantage is its small reach. Other advantages include:

  • Simple and low cost implementation
  • Low electrical power requirements
  • Directed point to point connection
  • Efficient and reliable data transmission.

For infrared communication standards have been developed which are oriented to possible applications. In the following these ...
