1.3. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendations

A number of W3C Recommendations (the W3C chooses to call them “recommendations” rather than “standards”) involve XML processing. Different people with different guidelines developed each Recommendation at different times. Five Recommendations (including the Schema Recommendation itself), provide context for this book:

  • The XML Recommendation, Extensible Markup Language (XML) 1.0 (Second Edition)

  • The Namespace Recommendation, Namespaces in XML

  • The Infoset Recommendation, XML Information Set

  • The XPath Recommendation, XML Path Language (XPath)

  • The Schema Recommendation, XML Schema
