Walter Chappell (1925–2000) was an accomplished poet, painter, composer, and printmaker whose photography was imbued with his philosophical and spiritual thoughts. As a young man he studied both architectural drawing and musical composition. His friendship and work association with Minor White led him to explore photography deeply, and he moved to Rochester, New York, to study printmaking with White, and there he wrote and edited for Aperture magazine, assisted White in his workshops, and worked as curator at the George Eastman House.
