1800 to 1849
The early 1800s see a huge expansion in the chemistry of photography. From the very first permanent photograph in 1827 to the first modern photograph, the Daguerreotype, which arrives a mere decade later, developments are rapid. Lens development, as you can see from the diagrams, also takes tremendous strides forward.
1802: The Scovill Manufacturing Company starts in Waterbury, Connecticut, as a maker of brass buttons, sewing hardware, and other brass and copper items. The factory, housed in a former grist mill on the Mad River, will go on—in 1839—to become the first maker of silvered photographic plates in the USA.
1804: William Hyde Wollaston (1766–1826) invents a modern positive meniscus lens for eyeglasses.
